Best entertainment for sick days: What to read, watch and listen to while resting

Flu season is in full swing and just when I thought I’d dodged the bullet, it hit me hard. Headache, fatigue and a mean cough meant I was chained to the sickbed (aka my sofa) for days on end.

I am NOT good at sitting still and resting, which is why I decided to treat this unexpected lazy time as an experiment. Aside from sleeping as much as possible (the best medicine IMO), I consumed any media that would keep me entertained.

Whether you’re down bad with sickness (I hope not) or just looking for some easy entertainment, here’s a list of light pieces to read, watch and listen to:

Read

My Mom’s Style by Cup of Jo

In her blog post “My Mom’s Style”, Joanna Goddard looks back at old family photos and gets inspired by her mother’s style from back in the day. It’s such a nostalgic, heartfelt article with timeless style inspo – a fantastic reminder that great style endures over decades!

If you’re already over at Cup of Jo: This travel advice by a seven-year old was had me laughing out loud – our reminder to ask for all the free snacks on the plane!

Elevate Your Weekend With a Cozy Cafe-Inspired Gathering by Camille Styles

Is there anything better than enjoying a good cup of coffee with your besties? This article on how to host your own café at home inspired me so much and now I can’t wait to get fully well again to invite some friends over!

Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson

Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson is a novel about a pair of siblings who – after their mother’s death – are about to discover a world of family secrets. While that may sound grim at first, it is about protecting the ones we love, family, sisterhood and life in the diaspora. It’s emotional, inspiring and also fast-paced enough to keep you glued to the pages. An absolute recommendation!

Listen

The Run-Through with Vogue

I love getting behind-the-scenes insights into the world of Vogue with this podcast! It’s so intimate and fun while also keeping you up to date with what’s going on in fashion. I really enjoyed this episode on the Sabrina Carpenter cover.

Never Give Up by Tors

The Tors’ new album Never Give Up is short and sweet: six songs filled with inspiration, emotion and finest indie-folk rhythms.

Watch

Daisy Jones & The Six

I know I’m late to the party – but how GOOD is the Daisy Jones & The Six series?! I read and loved the book when it came out but had never gotten around to watching the series. Well, now I had lots of time to catch up.

The series follows the rise and fall of the fictional band Daisy Jones & The Six in the 70s. There’s love with all its complications, big dreams and crushing realities. The fashion is to die for and don’t even get me started on the music! Above all, it really is one of my favourite screen adaptations of a novel. I could talk about it forever, but just do yourself a favour and watch it asap.

If all else fails, at LEAST listen to Aurora, the album by Daisy Jones & The Six! Yes, they produced an entire album for the series, all based on the lyrics from the book.

With Love, Meghan

Unless you live below a rock, you’ve heard of Meghan Sussex’ new Netflix series. In With Love, Meghan, she shares cooking, gardening and hosting tips in a cosy setting with friends and other celebrities. It’s less of a tutorial but rather an invitation to just tag along.

It’s so comforting and fun to watch even if you’re not a DIY-lover. Just in line with the Martha Steward’s documentary and Ina Garten’s memoir, it’s about the joy of small things and special moments.

The Big Wedding

I was searching for some of that Nancy Meyers nostalgia and stumbled upon The Big Wedding. While not actually produced by Nany Meyers, the entire setting and interior choices were just up her alley.

The plot is silly and at times rude – but also filled with the nostalgia of summers in the early 2010s and to-die-for interior inspiration. So, if you don’t mind the plot and are down to enjoy the vibes, this is the feel-good film for you!

These are the films, books, music and podcasts that got me through my flu – which ones would you recommend?

Stay healthy!

Love, Carola
