A trip to Berlin

Last weekend, my husband and I used the bank holiday for a short getaway to Berlin. It was a much needed break and we had a blast exploring the city together.

Day 1

We started our first day with a relaxing breakfast at the restaurant Alex at Alexanderplatz. It is situated right underneath the Alex, the famous TV tower, and has a lovely view on the St. Marienkirche and Wasserkaskaden, a lively plaza with water fountains.

After our breakfast, we explored the area surrounding the Alex and went for a little retail therapy in the many shops at the Alexanderplatz.

To explore the town a little more while resting our legs, we then took a boat cruise – a great way to explore Berlin from a different perspective. Did you know that Berlin has more rivers than Venice and Amsterdam have canals?

The Bode Museum
Alte Nationalgalerie
Berlin Cathedral

I was stunned by the breathtaking museums and the Cathedral and can’t wait to explore the Museum Island a little more next time, as we unfortunately just didn’t have enough time to do so this time. One weekend is simply not enough time to see Berlin!

Day 2

On our second day, we chose to visit some of the most popular sights: Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and the Eastside Gallery. We took a hop on hop off bus tour to get around and see some other sights on the way, too. To be honest, however, I would not recommend buying a hop on hop off bus ticket: Once you’re in the centre of Berlin, most sights are within walking distance, anyway, and if you do need transport to get to another place, public transport is often the fastest and cheapest way to get around. So take it from me: Just get a pass for public transport and let Google Maps guide your way!

Brandenburg Gate – Come here early in the morning if you want to avoid the crowds!

If, like us, you made the mistake of coming late but you still want to take some photos, check out the pillars next to the gate. They’re a really cool spot, too, and with a little bit of luck and patience, you’ll be able to get a few shots without SO many people in them.

Reichstagsgebäude

The glass dome of the Reichtagsgebäude is open to the public and you can take a tour or explore it on your own. Just make an online reservation well ahead of time – it’s booked out way in advance.

After exploring the city, we enjoyed a drink and some snacks at the bank of the Spree. Alongside the river, you will find lots of cafés, restaurants and outdoor bars. On top of that, there often are live artists showing off their skills – whether it be singing, dancing or fire breathing.

We ended our night watching the (unfortunately cloudy) sunset from the platform on top of the ParkInn hotel at Alexanderplatz. From here, you have a fantastic view on the Alex and over the entire town. Plus: at just 6 € entrance fee it is a fraction of the price you pay to get on top of the Alex. If you feel adventurous, you can even book a free-fall jump from the platform!

Two days were definitely not enough time to explore Berlin but I had a fantastic time and can’t wait to return soon to get to know the city better. Do you have any tips for Berlin? I’d love to know more!

Love, Carola
