Simple habits and tips that’ll help you to pick up a book more often.
Instead of doom scrolling for hours, so many of us want to pick up the good ol‘ book more frequently. But let’s be honest: it’s not always easy to actually sit down and take the time to read.
You reeeally meant it when you set that New Year’s resolution and now it’s, well, going… not so great? Stick with me for some tips that will help you to read more frequently – it all comes down to simple habits 😉
1. Always have a book around
Honestly, THE easiest way to read more is to make sure that you always have a book at hand. Have a book in the living room, by the bedside, in your handbag… you get the drill. This way, whenever the opportunity arises, you’ll be so much more likely to reach for your current read than your phone.
2. Read ebooks
For various reasons, reading ebooks may help you to read more: You have unlimited literature at hand and it’s easier to take along when you go out. You can also switch back and forth between different books if you need a break from your current read.
Depending on your circumstances, a physical book may sometimes not be an option (e. g. when putting your toddler to bed in the dark). So consider giving esbooks a try, if you haven’t yet.
You don’t need to get a new device (like a Kindle) to start reading ebooks. My favourite way to enjoy them is using the Libby app on my phone or tablet. The BEST thing: It’s free – all you need is a library membership. What’s better than unlimitied free books in your pocket?!
3. Choose great books
It’s a no-brainer: If you can’t stop thinking of what the protagonist is going to do next, it’s nearly impossible to NOT read way past your bedtime. So choose books that draw you in and that you’re excited to pick up. You’ll automatically read so much more.
4. Have a reading list
On this note, make sure you have plenty of ideas what you want to read next. There’s nothing more likely to provoke a reading slump than finishing a five-star-read and having absolutely no idea what your next read should be.
This is why I personally keep an extensive „want to read“-list on Goodreads and my Pinterest. When it’s time to choose the next book, I simply scroll through them until something catches my eye. It’s also a great way to not forget seasonal reads you want to pick up once the time rolls around.
5. Join a book club
Positive peer pressure for the win! Having some reading buddies with whom you can share your thoughts and perhaps even meet to discuss is such a motivation. It’ll make you actually finish what you started and turns reading from an often solitary activity into something to be enjoyed together.
Whether you start a book club with your besties, join one at your local library or check out one of the many online book clubs – choose what suits you best and enjoy the exchange with like-minded readers.
